A time to learn

by Peter Namisi

A pandemic is the most dreaded thing in our lives as humans. In addition its also one of the best test on our preparedness to be able to change,  be consistent and also to show the level of care we can have towards others.

The covid-19 period came into my life and has been a lesson that I would live to narrate to whoever will be interested to hear about it. Immediately after the government suspend school in March,  as a student it never crossed my mind that it will take a whooping seven month before we are called in to finish our semester.

For most people it would be a time they would call ‘wasted time.’ I don’t know why they refer to it as such. Rather for me it was a period to reflect on my life and some skills that I had and had not been put to use as required. As a student of media and as a film maker I took it as a chance to  learn a lot from other film makers and media gurus on what they do different in order to better their output.

Netflix was also my number one movie site since it has the standard film project that you can critique and learn from in order to equip myself with some knowledge from content to production and even post post production.

Later on,  it was also a nice opportunity to take up the challenge of going for the daily hustles with a friend when the country started to open up. Something that I have never done before. It was interesting,  tiring and above all fulfilling because now you start adding value to your life. The epitome of my holiday during the pandemic was doing practices to be fit as a person.

It would alarm everyone who was on quarantine the their body weight would increase due to the staying home without being actively engaged in something that would help them cut it down. So exercises came in handy to help maintain my body and also for health benefits.

Covid Effects on Sports

by Peter Namisi.

Sporting activities around the globe are one of the social and economical activities that have suffered a major blow due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

For a long time now with the suspension of football leagues around the world to mitigate the spread of the virus,  many have lost in terms of revenues and even that spirit of sportmanship has gone down.

The international sports arena and even the local ones have been affected. For instance the many local players that play in leagues out of the Kenyan borders had to stay out of the environment they are used to in terms of training and getting used to the climate of those areas during the quarantine period.

The other impact of this pandemic was vivid during the gradual opening of sport activities where we have had several major events that did happened with no fans. Something that would never have been imagined before. Sometimes what makes or breaks the players is that loud chear of the audience. One would really give his/her best shot on the pitch just because the don’t want to dissapoint their fans.

An example of an event that is happening without the presence of the fans is the amazing English Premier League and so many European Leagues. Back to Kenya,  the FKF premier league formally the KPL is also under the pressure of going on without the fans on the pitch.

To some extent this reality hits hard and chances are that so many people in the sporting industry are traumatized by the happenings. Player are demoralized and the end would be poor performance

MMU INNOVATIONS 2O2O

By Peter Namisi.

Multimedia University’s fifth innovation week held from the 26th of February, 2020 did prove beyond any doubt that there are several ideas and methods that can be brought forth to combat many challenges that the universe faces.

This time round there was a display of different inventions by students and many other outsiders who had an interest in this year’s  innovations. They also include speakers who give talks on the positivity of technology and stressed on the importance of making yourself ready for the market and artificial intelligence.

The most important thing that I picked out of this innovation week from everyone that had a chance to showcase whatever they had was on the continued production and keeping in mind issues of environmental conservation. A concept that was referred to as eco-innovation.

This involved talks on improved sorting processes for waste materials into groupings such as construction wate, household, industrial, electrical and electronic wastes.

Innovative building products that reduce environmental impact and/or support a rational use of natural resources was also discussed under this topic.

Sorting, reuse and recycling of construction and demolition waste was suggested as the way to go . Innovative water systems including water saving, re-use of natural waters, rainwater collection.

Effects of Corona Virus on Sports

by Charity Akinyi Ogola

National women volleyball

The Migical Kenyan Open, a European Tour tournament, was the first to feel the brunt of the virus. The tournament had been scheduled to start on (Thursday 12th march) running through the rest of the weekend but was called off. The ministry of Sports made a decision to allow any teams to travel out of the country e.g The Natunal Super League and Women Premier League matches would go on but behind closed doors. This made the Natunal Judo team failing to travel to Senegal where they were scheduled to take place in Olympic qualifiers.

Global sports value

The global value of sports industry is estimated at US$756 billion annually but due to covid, millions of jobs are at risk both globally and locally like Sports professionals who major in sporting services e.g traveling, tourism, infrastructure e.t.c.

National Rugby TTeTeaTeaTeam

Professional rugby players and athletes are also under pressure to reschedule there training while trying to stay fit at home making them to risk losing professional sponsors who may not support them as initially agreed. In addition, the cancellation of games also impacts many social benefits of global and local sport events whichcan cement social cohesion.

TEMBO GRILL SALES

by Peter Namisi

Businesses around the world usually have their estimation of sales dependent on seasons and time. A visit to Tembo Grill Bar and Restaurant in Ongata Rongai proves this.

A glimpse at their sales per week of some of the favorite drinks sold to their customers has given us some figures that is a representation of the consumption rate of their products.

The business at a normal pace, that is without any interference from the market forces depicts a good sale towards the weekend as shown in the table below. As a recreational facility, many people visits occasionally when the weekend jets in as they are now free from their jobs or errands.

During the start of the week the sales are steady but not as good since not so many people visits them.

In my pie chart we take a look at two days where on Monday there is high sales in energy drinks as compared to any other drink they offer.  On Friday, it’s a clear indication that many people go for the alcoholic drinks to relax since most weekends are occasioned with parties and entertainment activities.

The novel Corona Virus has disrupted sports all over the world with major football leagues across Europe and the world supsended over fears of new infections. The Italian Serie A would be played behind closed doors but with infections recorded by players nobody is sure whether the league would continue as scheduled till the 3rd of April. The Italian Olympic Committee sat today and part of the resolutions is to suspend all sports both national and international until the containment of the Covid 19 pandemic. The Rugby Union was equally affected as scheduled matches on 14th and 15th of March between England and Italy had to be called off.Italy’s sports Minister Vincenzo Spadafora has accused Serie A for negligence following his call to have all sports suspended. He said that it did not make sense for football matches to continue yet in Nothern Italy upto 16million people were on quarantine.

not business as usual…

Jane a trader in Rongai’s upmarket surbub looks at her fiscal report of the day and shakes her head in disbelief, another day another bad sales. This has been the norm for the past three weeks and to her it doesnt ring nicely.Troubling questions bomb her mind on how she would afford her rent on time and even settle the fee ballance of her son in college. All this she attributes to a bad business environment created by the local authorities.”The county government of Kajiado has stringent policies on tax collection and they are hell bent to collecting money at the expense of our concerns.I sell nothing we sell nothing” she tells me this as she points to a cluster of traders seated under the hot afternoon sun waiting for buyers patiently a patience far exceeding that of a lover.Jane is a micro trader who deals in foodstuff and other utility items.Years back she used to enjoy some of the best trading seasons where she was assured of high profits, life was indeed sweet.”curses like chickens come home to roost, this is evident with the leaders we have elected in the past years and this has clearly influenced the business environment ,the purchasing power is low and we cannot blame the citizens,I only blame the government of the day for not creating the best business environment. We will prevail I believe so .”she tells me this looking dejected as a stream of sweat trickles down her cheeks.

She let me have a look at her sales book and it was manifest that each day the sales have been dwindling and it did not get any better.

As I left her stall there was something clear that the traders were unhappy and this was extrapolated to the entire consumers, new hurting trends were being set and it was time for the rectification of the economy.

Multimedia University Of Kenya Innovation Week

Moreen Kathure

Multimedia University of Kenya organized its 4th innovation week on 26th to 28th of February aiming to promote research and innovation to achieve industrial revolution. The realization of the big four agendas was the major area of focus. Firstly, food security which is under threat in Kenya considering the government declared a national drought emergency for all 23 of Kenya’s arid and demi-arid counties in 2017. Secondly, affordable housing since the country’s population is growing rapidly with a majority of unemployed youths who will soon become parents hence the need for low cost houses with all the essential utilities to sustain life. Thirdly, manufacturing as a key sector in the development of the country’s economy by creating jobs and contributing to national output and exports. Additionally, universal healthcare is a big issue because millions of Kenyans cannot afford to pay for health services because of poverty as shown by the 2014 World Bank report which indicated that only 20 percent of Kenyans have access to medical insurance.
The people allowed to exhibit were multimedia university students and other students from various universities in Kenya. The external participants paid a registration fee of 1000 per innovation. I encountered five exhibitors who had transforming projects to showcase ranging from solar energy to windmills as a supplementary source of electricity, being that electricity is the driving force to industrial revolution by powering all machinery there is need to ensure its stability. In comparison to other exhibitions held in Multimedia University the one held this year aligns with the country’s vision to achieve industrial revolution by the year 2030 and the agendas tackled are rather urgent because they affect the daily lives of a big percentage of Kenyan citizens and if realized they will speedup industrialization.
