Jane a trader in Rongai’s upmarket surbub looks at her fiscal report of the day and shakes her head in disbelief, another day another bad sales. This has been the norm for the past three weeks and to her it doesnt ring nicely.Troubling questions bomb her mind on how she would afford her rent on time and even settle the fee ballance of her son in college. All this she attributes to a bad business environment created by the local authorities.”The county government of Kajiado has stringent policies on tax collection and they are hell bent to collecting money at the expense of our concerns.I sell nothing we sell nothing” she tells me this as she points to a cluster of traders seated under the hot afternoon sun waiting for buyers patiently a patience far exceeding that of a lover.Jane is a micro trader who deals in foodstuff and other utility items.Years back she used to enjoy some of the best trading seasons where she was assured of high profits, life was indeed sweet.”curses like chickens come home to roost, this is evident with the leaders we have elected in the past years and this has clearly influenced the business environment ,the purchasing power is low and we cannot blame the citizens,I only blame the government of the day for not creating the best business environment. We will prevail I believe so .”she tells me this looking dejected as a stream of sweat trickles down her cheeks.
She let me have a look at her sales book and it was manifest that each day the sales have been dwindling and it did not get any better.
As I left her stall there was something clear that the traders were unhappy and this was extrapolated to the entire consumers, new hurting trends were being set and it was time for the rectification of the economy.
