Multimedia University Of Kenya Innovation Week

Multimedia University of Kenya organized its 4th innovation week on 26th to 28th of February aiming to promote research and innovation to achieve industrial revolution. The realization of the big four agendas was the major area of focus. Firstly, food security which is under threat in Kenya considering the government declared a national drought emergency for all 23 of Kenya’s arid and demi-arid counties in 2017. Secondly, affordable housing since the country’s population is growing rapidly with a majority of unemployed youths who will soon become parents hence the need for low cost houses with all the essential utilities to sustain life. Thirdly, manufacturing as a key sector in the development of the country’s economy by creating jobs and contributing to national output and exports. Additionally, universal healthcare is a big issue because millions of Kenyans cannot afford to pay for health services because of poverty as shown by the 2014 World Bank report which indicated that only 20 percent of Kenyans have access to medical insurance.
The people allowed to exhibit were multimedia university students and other students from various universities in Kenya. The external participants paid a registration fee of 1000 per innovation. I encountered five exhibitors who had transforming projects to showcase ranging from solar energy to windmills as a supplementary source of electricity, being that electricity is the driving force to industrial revolution by powering all machinery there is need to ensure its stability. In comparison to other exhibitions held in Multimedia University the one held this year aligns with the country’s vision to achieve industrial revolution by the year 2030 and the agendas tackled are rather urgent because they affect the daily lives of a big percentage of Kenyan citizens and if realized they will speedup industrialization.
